To borrow an aphorism—writing about spirituality is like dancing about architecture. In other words, it’s a challenge, though not an impossible one. In this workshop, we will discover that writing about our spiritual lives is not only possible but potentially enjoyable and rewarding. Through study of outstanding examples of the genre, in-class writing prompts, short lessons on craft, and class discussion, participants will work toward developing a spiritual vocabulary that articulates their individual experiences and traditions, while connecting them to the shared human experience. Spiritual memoir is open to writers from all spiritual and religious traditions, as well as to those who claim no spiritual or religious tradition. Essayist Joan Didion wrote, “We tell ourselves stories in order to live.” In this workshop, we will discover new and engaging ways to articulate our unique spiritual stories, in order to more fully explore and inhabit our spiritual lives.
