PRESENTE is an interactive textile, photographic, and community installation about latinidad, womyn of color, and education. The installation pays homage to latinx womyn and weaves together ideas between the artists, the influential muxeres photographed, and the audience to cultivate a space for dialogue.

Mujeres Malas is an artist collective of self-identifying women*. We challenge ideas of latinidad and different forms of oppression without the limitations of censorship.

MECA will host an Artist Reception on March 15 at 6pm
as well as an Open Mic night on April 27 at 6pm

The women of Mujeres Malas:

Arely Peña was born in Monterrey, Mexico in 1996 and has lived in Houston,
Texas since 2011. She works in a variety of mediums, including video, performance,
installation, and photography. Her interdisciplinary projects explore concepts of identity, memory, and communication. Peña has exhibited at the Blaffer Art Museum, Houston; Lawndale Art Center, Houston; and Hardy and Nance Studios, Houston.

Maureen Penders is a Salvadoran artist and educator, living and working in Houston. She received her BFA in Photography and Digital Media from the University of Houston. Penders is interested in conversations which touch upon a broad range of social aspects which are relevant to her life and experiences, predominantly the systemic, socio-economic inequality in El Salvador. She also works with themes regarding the LGBTQ community and the need for respect to be afforded to its members to ensure equal rights within all societies.

Natalia Barrientos was born and raised in Tarija, Bolivia. She studied Film, Television and Photography in Argentina. In 2012 she moved to Houston, Texas where she is currently working towards her BFA from the University of Houston. Barrientos uses photography, video art and performance to explore the interaction between her family relationships, the function of memory and sexuality. Her work has shown in Los Angeles CineFest 2018, the Aurora Extremely Shorts Film Festival 2017, Fresh Meet Film Festival 2017 and The Blaffer Museum.

Jessica González is a visual artist born and raised in Houston, Texas. As a first generation American born to Salvadoran/Honduran immigrants, González creates work that is influenced by her experiences balancing and navigating these contrasting cultures. As a way to understand and cope with the difficult immigration process that her family faces, González plays the part of a visual “stenographer" through her artistic practice. By curating and re-contextualizing documents, photographs, and nostalgic ephemera, she constructs a space in which form is given to her experiences.

Karen Y. Martinez is a digital filmmaker from Hidalgo, Mexico.
An MFA candidate of Interdisciplinary Practices and Emerging Forms at the University of Houston, her work explores belonging, latinidad and femininity. You can find her working alongside Houston Janitors, the labor and immigrant movements.

Leticia Contreras is a queer, afro-xicana multidisciplinary artist born and raised in Houston, TX. The themes in her work include memory, family lineage, storytelling, and centering the lives of those pushed to the margins. She is currently an MFA candidate of Interdisciplinary Practices and Emerging Forms at the University of Houston.
